Auto-Owners Insurance Review

Auto-Owners InsuranceCompany Overview:  Auto-Owners Insurance Group has been functioning as a group of independent mutual insurance agencies for ninety years. It has been on the Fortune 500 list every year since 2002, and has a total written premium of more than $5 billion.

Originally founded strictly as an automobile insurance company, Auto-Owners now includes five property and casualty companies, and one insurer that offers life, health, and annuity products.

As part of its commitment to social awareness, Auto-Owners Insurance supports the "W82TXT" (wait to text) program which educates motorists about the dangers of distracted driving.

Auto Insurance Products: Auto-Owners offers an array of product lines under the automobile  insurance division, including personal passenger auto insurance, motorcycle/moped coverage, antique auto coverage, and even coverage for recreational vehicles.

Customer Service: Because Auto-Owners is sold through independent agencies, their general customer services options are limited. Each division offers access via form-based email, and phone numbers, while policyholders can log in to address specific issues or process claims.

Consumer Satisfaction:  While the headquarters of Auto-Owners Insurance is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau, the company has been given an A+ rating. Customer reviews at are mixed, however,  and the company has only earned a star rating of 2.48 out of 5 at that site, with many people remarking that claims are not handled well. Only 44% of Viewpoints reviewers would recommend this company.

Connectivity: Auto-Owners website offers form-based email for general questions, and has both a claims center and a customer center, but both require a username and password for entry. The customer center appears to allow policy management, bill payment, and claims status requests.

Is there an app for that? Auto-Owners Insurance does not offer a smartphone app.
