famers insuranceCompany Overview:  Farmers Insurance opened for business in 1928 as the Farmers Automobile Inter-Insurance Exchange in Los Angeles, CA. Today, it's the third-largest insurer of private passenger automobiles in the United States, as well as offering a comprehensive product line ranging from homeowners coverage to financial services. It has offices in 41 states and employs about 20,000 people. After the break-up of AIG, Farmers also acquired 21st Century Insurance, which operates mostly as a separate entity.

Auto Insurance Products: Under the Farmers name, the company offers personal automobile insurance, business automobile insurance, and collectible automobile insurance, including coverage for modified and "kit" cars. Motorcycle and recreational vehicle insurance can be obtained via its sister company, Foremost.

Customer Service: New and existing customers have access to toll-free phone numbers and form-based email via the company website, including a "find an agent" button.  In addition, existing customers have the ability to access their agent's contact information via the web, either to send form-based email, direct email, or to call.

Consumer Satisfaction: Farmers is an accredited company with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), but the actual corporation has no rating at this time. BBB's website says that the company has reasonable response times when complaints are made, and stresses that all insurance companies receive complaints. It also says that the general consumer opinion of Farmers is slightly above average. This rating is corroborated by consumer opinion website, which gives the company a rating of 3.71 out of 5, and says that 74% of customers recommend it.

Connectivity:  Farmer's has a website at, where policy holders and prospective clients can request rate quotes, seek an agent local to them, or ask questions via form-based email. Contact numbers are easy to find, and there's a comprehensive collection of FAQs as well as a learning center. Policy holders can pay their premiums and file claims online.  Is there an app for that?  There are three Farmers apps in the iPhone app store: iClaim, iFarmers, and Farmers Balloon Ride. All are free.
