State Farm Insurance Review

Written by Michael Browne

State Farm InsuranceCompany Overview:  While State Farm has existed in some form since 1922. As a mutual insurance company it does not have shareholders but it is the parent of several subsidiaries providing other types of insurance. The auto insurance branch, State Farm Mutual Automobile Insurance Company, has been the largest auto insurer in the United States since 1942, currently covering about one in every five cars on the road.

Auto Insurance Products: State Farm offers private passenger and business auto insurance. They also offer motorcycle and boat insurance.

Customer Service: New and existing customers can use the State Farm website to find an agent, make payment arrangements, request a quote, or manage their accounts. There's also an online claims center, for filing claims. There is no central toll-free number for the insurance division of State Farm, however; in order to speak with a person, you have to go through the "find an agent" interface - unless your call is about technical support. There's also form-based email.

Consumer Satisfaction:  State Farm's main office is not BBB accredited, though some individual offices are. BBB stresses that all insurance companies are likely to have complaints and lists the reason for the main office not being accredited as "failure to respond to two complaints." BBB rates State Farm with a B+. Consumer reviews from Viewpoints.com, however, are more favorable with 85% of reviewers recommending the company, and an overall star rating of 4.2 out of 5.

Connectivity: State Farm's website (www.statefarm.com) offers existing and prospective clients the ability to request rate quotes, find a local agent, send questions via form-based email. A major plus is the State Farm learning center, where visitors to the site can read about different types of insurance, and learn about the products as well as the process. Contact numbers, however, are difficult to find, and there is no central number for insurance information.  Is there an app for that?  State Farm's App Store offerings include State Farm Pocket Agent (for insurance needs), Steer Clear Mobile, a learning program for teenagers, and State Farm Friday Night Feats, a video contest celebrating high school football. All three apps are free.
