The General Review

Written by Michael Browne

The General Auto InsuranceCompany Overview:  Since 1963, The General Auto Insurance has been selling auto policies to customers with tight budgets and/or less-than-pristine driving records. They're one of the few companies that will take clients with recent violations on their records, and they offer products for people who need to file SR22 claims.

Auto Insurance Products: The General's product options are fairly basic: private passenger auto insurance is all they sell. However this company has successfully carved its own niche, specializing in low-cost insurance for high-risk drivers, and selling it almost exclusively online.

Customer Service: The General works primarily online, with an anonymous quote engine and form-based email available to clients and prospective clients alike. The company also offers a toll-free phone number, and several resources, in the form of articles and links to industry authorities.

Consumer Satisfaction: Based on various websites, consumer satisfaction with The General is mixed. Most clients who have NOT had claims are happy with their policies and cheap pricing, but those who have had accidents feel that necessary support isn't there. The BBB has neither accredited nor even rated The General, but consumer reviews at give the insurer a rating of 3.33 out of 5 stars, with 64% of them willing to recommend it to others.

Connectivity: The General's website is more text-heavy than most, but provides a wealth of information, including special sections for SR22 information, claims, and the ability for existing clients to manage their accounts online. There's also form-based email for asking questions.

Is there an app for that? The General does not offer a smartphone app at this time.
